Gena Ross recently released her official campaign platform. It centers on 8 issues that she feels are not being adequately addressed by the current representation. In her speeches thus far, Ross has mainly focused on her background and reasons for running, and this is the first collection of issues that she’s presented. A brief rundown of the 8 issues are listed below, along with some information from Ross’ official website and public appearances she’s made. This list provides a better understanding of what Ross’ representation would look like in Congress. 1. Affordable Housing Ross has specifically designated affordable housing for veterans as a priority of hers. On her website, she states that she “supports constituents taking ownership in their communities.” One way that this can manifest is through communities working to provide aid and support to veterans and anyone experiencing or at risk of homelessness. 2. Agriculture Advancement Ross supports Country of Origin labelling. COOL regulations require certain foods, mainly meat, to be labelled with the country they were produced in. In 2018, these regulations were partially repealed by Congress, even though farmers largely are in favor of the regulations. By supporting COOL, Ross is supporting the ability of the American people to know where their meat is raised, slaughtered, and processed, and standing behind Missouri’s farmers. 3. Curbing Climate Change In an interview with Northwest Missouri Public Radio, Ross identified climate change as an issue that all Missourians should care about. On her website, she stated that she “support[s] a national adaption policy that includes investment in infrastructure, flood mitigation efforts and sustainable farming.” As climate change is one of the most imminent crises facing America, it is vital to have a representative like Ross who believes that change at the national level is needed. 4. Economic Recovery Bringing jobs back to rural Missouri is important to Ross. The 6th district spans a variety of counties, many of which are sparsely populated. Ross wants to not only bring more jobs to rural Missouri, but also to ensure that all have access to the internet. Increasing the population of northern Missouri through job growth would positively impact local economies, as well as bolster communities that are currently struggling. 5. Education Reform As an educator, Ross is passionate and well-informed about the educational issues facing Missouri. She wants to work with educators to make sure that funding and support are being provided where they are most needed. As she has stated many times before, Ross believes that every child deserves a equal, quality education, and she is willing to fight for that right. Ross also supports the implementation of a universal pre-kindergarten option. 6. Fighting Injustice Ross has been an outspoken advocate for equality. She stands behind the Black Lives Matter movement, and is actively educating those around her about the injustice that POC face in America. We need representatives that understand what it means to face discrimination, and that are passionate about fighting the injustice and racism that is built into our nation. Gena Ross fulfills these criteria and so much more, which is what makes her the right choice for Missouri. "Discrimination by any means, shape or form is not acceptable. Every human being deserves to be treated fairly, with dignity and respect. Stop the violence, stop the hate!" 7. Healthcare Expansion As we detailed in a previous post, Ross has a three-pronged approach to the rural healthcare crisis. She wants to ensure quality healthcare to all residents of this district, protect individuals with pre-existing conditions, and expand insurance coverage in Missouri. As a COVID survivor, Ross understands the urgency of issues with the current healthcare system, and is justly prioritizing it. 8. Worker & Labor Rights Ross supports an increase to the federal minimum wage, and stands behind the minimum wage increase passed by Missouri voters in 2018. Several of Ross’ other issues encompass worker and labor rights, such as healthcare expansion and economic recovery. If reading through these issues gave you insight into the various failings of Missouri’s current system, ask yourself: what can I do to create a positive change? It is crucial to start by using your voice in the impending election to elect a representative that believes primarily in caring for people. That representative is Gena Ross. Sam Graves has had nearly 20 years in office to fix the issues outlined above, but he hasn’t. That alone is reason enough to vote for a change for Missouri’s 6th. And, if this blog post helped you learn more about Gena Ross, send it to a friend voting in Missouri’s 6th! Together, we can elect a better representative.
