On Tuesday, we were able to attend a Leadership Lunch with Dr. Gena Ross. This virtual lunch hour discussion was hosted by Missouri M.A.D.E., an organization that is focused on "mobilizing and diversifying" Missouri's elections. Amanda Morrison, the founder and executive director of Missouri M.A.D.E., moderated a discussion between Ross and attendees. We were able to hear Ross answer not only the prompts that Morrison had prepared for her, but also questions that viewers asked her in real time. Virtual events like this one are becoming the norm for campaigning during COVID-19. Ross is no stranger to a digitally-focused campaign: she has an impressive list of virtual town halls, rallies, and other events that she has used to connect with voters thus far. This particular event gave Ross the platform to answer a question that is central to every campaign: why is she running? Ross said that she has been wanting to run for a long time, but the timing wasn't right. Specifically, she cited the age of her kids as her biggest reason for waiting to run. She said she has been dissatisfied with the current representation for a while, but this year was the right time for her to do something about it. To hear Ross' full answer about why she's running, watch the video below. Ross has continued to fiercely campaign for the congressional race despite the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a COVID-19 survivor, she is all too familiar with the severity of the disease. Her opponent, incumbent Sam Graves, has been going to events around Missouri’s 6th District without wearing a mask or observing social distancing. Last Thursday, Graves posted several photos of him at a meeting with Kirksville business owners and university officials. All those in attendance were wearing a mask except Graves. Photos by Representative Sam Graves We are proud to back Ross, a candidate who is taking COVID-19 precautions seriously and who requires social distancing and masks at her in-person events. It is embarrassing that our current representative does not respect the health and safety of his constituents, and it serves as a reminder that change is necessary.
