Dr. Gena Ross has always been a strong supporter of equality in all aspects of life. Ross believes that every human deserves to be treated fairly and equitably. This set of morals and desire to see things done better is what drove Ross to run for Congress in the first place. It is also the reason why she adamantly opposes the passing of Missouri’s Amendment 3 in this upcoming election. Understanding Amendment 3 is crucial for voters, but the wording of it can be confusing, which is why we wanted to wanted to make a post explaining the amendment and its consequences.
Amendment 3, if passed, would eliminate the nonpartisan demographer that is in charge of mapping out the districts of Missouri. The demographer would be replaced with a group of 10 individuals selected by Missouri’s governor. While the coalition is supposed to be bipartisan, as Dr. Ross said in a Facebook post, is any group picked by a partisan governor truly bipartisan? It would allow lawmakers to redistrict maps behind closed doors, something Missouri voters clearly don't want after the passing of Amendment 1, which created the nonpartisan demographer.
According to Clean Missouri, this new amendment would not properly represent the people of Missouri when redistricting. Children and non-citizens would not be counted. It would also weaken protections put in place to protect people of color in Missouri. For all of these reasons, Dr. Ross has explicitly stated her intention to vote no on Amendment 3.
"NO ON 3! The Dirty Missouri Amendment is the politicians' deceptive plan to rig the maps — but Missouri voters will reject it." - Dr. Gena Ross on a September 22 Facebook post
Amendment 3 is opposed by more than just Missouri’s Democratic party. Republican and Independent officials have also condemned the bill. It is not what Missouri needs, and understanding this before the election is incredibly important.
We are proud to back Dr. Gena Ross for many reasons, and especially because of her stance on this amendment proposal. Get out and vote on November 3rd, and join Dr. Gena Ross in voting ‘No to Dirty MO’.
